NM drought will not hinder summer activities

Despite the dry conditions, New Mexico residents are encouraged to participate in outdoor activities. Last week a joint press conference was held to remind New Mexicans state parks and recreation facilities are opened throughout the state.

New Mexico is experiencing a drought with precipitation lower than normal. State Engineer Scott Verhines said La Niña is to blame for the dry winter months, but weather patterns should change during the summer.

Without a burn ban, East Mountain visitors responsible for limiting fire dangers

Even though conditions are dry, there is a not a burn ban in the East Mountains in 2012.

That means people are free to have campfires and barbeques, but the U.S. Forest Service is warning everyone that it could become a dangerous wildfire in seconds-flat.

Camping opportunities attract people far beyond our fair city.

"We do have some concerns because we do get a lot of visitors that don't know the rules, (regulations) and forest manners if you want to call it that way," said Sandia Ranger District spokesperson Karen Takai.

Takai says with no burn-ban so far this season the forest service is facing a serious problem.

"The public doesn't know how to put out campfires anymore. 50 percent of our fires in the Sandias are abandoned campfires," said Takai.

It's been a while since campfires have been allowed here especially because of last year's terrible fire season.

East Mountains man sentenced to 15 years for child porn

An East Mountains man accused of producing child pornography was sentenced to 15 years in prison by a federal judge on Tuesday.

Joseph Martinez, 53, of Tijeras, New Mexico pleaded guilty to charges back in February.

Back in 2009, Bernalillo County Deputies found 300 videos containing child porn in Martinez's Tijeras home.

Officials originally went out to his house after getting a 911 call caused by some crossed wires. No one was home when deputies went inside and discovered the videos.

Martinez admitted to making the pornographic videos between 1992 and 1998. The victim was approximately five years old when the criminal activity began.

Martinez will serve a three-year term of supervised release after he completes his 15-year prison sentence.

He will also be required to register as a sex offender.

Albuquerque police officer arrested for domestic violence

An Albuquerque police officer has been arrested on a domestic violence charge.

Jonathan Romero, 41, was arrested over the weekend on a misdemeanor charge of battery on a household member.

According to a criminal complaint, Romero was in an argument with his wife about their divorce at their Tijeras home. She later went to bed.

That's when the report states that Romero went into the bedroom and tried to forcefully take her wedding ring off her finger.

Romero has been released from jail.

Police say Romero is a 14-year veteran on the force.
